THE VALDONS
“I (Who Have Nothing)”
DESCRIPTION:
Covering a song made famous by Tom Jones might seem like an odd choice for a Black R&B group in the early ’70s, but former Valdons vocalist Monroe Wright III explained they chose it for the choreography. The song is a desperate ballad of love, and the band poured everything into the performance.
The Valdons’ debut generated local buzz in Minneapolis, Minnesota, but never broke nationally, and the group soon split. Four decades later, The Valdons reunited to cut a new 7-inch for Secret Stash Records: “Stop Wait a Minute Girl B/W Whatcha Gonna Do”. The pressing sold out quickly, and that was it—until nearly a decade later, when the record found new life online and garnered millions of streams. Now, for the first time, The Valdons’ 1971 studio recordings will be reissued and made available digitally.
