Top 20 Hip Hop + Rap Songs of 2022
1. “Civil Disobedience” – Datin, Dax Hamma
Datin is currently one of Christian Hip Hop’s leading innovators, as he has birthed the God Over Money label, and has been instrumental in launching the Menace Movement conglomerate. His unique and diverse artistry skillset has brought him and his releases to the pinnacles of the Billboard charts, as well as served his message to the lowly alleys and backstreets of America. Dax Hamma, producer and engineer for Menace Movement was born and raised in Queens, New York. From an early age, Dax was influenced by Hip Hop music. As Dax was having success in the secular realm, producing records for TV and landing a song on radio, he knew this wasn’t the path God had for him. Being saved and radically converted at age 23, Dax knew the music he was involved in did not glorify The Lord, so he turned his attention to Christian Hip Hop.
This song is his protest. Though peaceful, it is still an aggressive and stern refusal to follow sin and culture. Datin will not conform regardless of the threats of cancellation. “I will live by faith, I will obey my conscience. I am The Menace and this is Civil Disobedience.”
2. “my dream.” – tylerhateslife.
The name Tylerhateslife might not instill the most positive image of an artist, but what if you were told that he might just be making the most unique brand of music you’ve ever heard? Take the challenge. Listen for yourself to experience this unique blend of hip-hop, rock, singer-songwriter, R&B, and—dare we say, punk? Great, so why does he “hate life?” Tyler explains, “I grew up doing whatever it took to find acceptance. It wasn’t until my mom passed away (seven years ago) that I started living through the idea of not being of, or conforming, to this world (John 12:25).” Tyler joined the U.S. Army in 2017 and is still an active, full-time soldier, yet has still amassed over 120,000 TikTok followers and worldwide social media fans.
“my dream.” started off as an open verse challenge on TikTok and ended up being Tyler’s first viral video. He and his wife were going through a tough time. It seemed everyone around him was saying that he cared about music more than his family. But that wasn’t true. Tyler believes God created him to help people and music is the avenue He gave him to do that. “This song expresses the fact that my wife is my most cherished gift from God,” says Tyler.
3. “Wins” – Vic Lucas
Vic Lucas represents the voice of a generation that is unapologetically different. Born in Nigeria, raised in South Africa, and discovered in the United States, Lucas’ musical tastes are as diverse as his upbringing. Armed with a versatile vocal palette, Vic shines in his ability to cross the boundaries of musical genre. From hard-hitting trap beats to enchanting electronic music, and dance-filled afrobeat sounds, he creates music that is not only culturally relevant but also spiritually significant. Earlier known as, “The Vicious Vic,” to date he’s experienced millions of digital streams and enjoyed a multiple-week charting hit with, “Enough,” seeing success on the Billboard Christian AC charts.
Vic Lucas rings in the summer season with a new celebratory track titled, “Wins.” The dance-filled and energetic number is a welcomed reminder that regardless of how the first-half of your year has gone, you will always have a reason to celebrate the victory you have been given over this world in Christ Jesus (1 Cor 15:57).
4. “A to C” – MvkeyyJ, TJ Carroll, Ray Knowledge

He’s since garnered the attention of major labels and artists such as Lecrae, Zaytoven, and Big Future Music Group. Now signed to RMG Amplify, he’s trailblazing for the next generation. Recently he was featured on the official NBA2K in-game soundtrack. He is also selected to become an official sync licensing artist on Music Bed; one of the biggest sync catalog websites in the world.

5. “Drown” – muted mike
muted mike is an Indianapolis-based independent producer, rapper, and songwriter. He focuses on mental health issues through his music. “muted mike” refers to his quieter, soft-spoken demeanor. He feels managing life is the only way to get through it. muted mike is also part of the 2022 Rapzilla Freshmen class.
“Drown” is a song about the emotional reaction to and the repercussions of drinking. Using drinking to defuse emotions is risky. Often it can inadvertently create a ticking time bomb. “It is a short-term solution that only causes more problems and damage to others,” says muted mike.
6. “TIC” – Gamfam, 350, Christopher Syncere, Palace
Christian rapper Gamfam is from Louisiana but is currently based out of Houston, TX. His mission is using his music to draw listeners closer to God. He’s new to the game but Gamfam has already had exclusive video releases on Rapzilla.com.
This song is about giving God glory in all situations. Isaac Mather made the beat from his Tourette’s syndrome. Seeing how he was able to use his situation to glorify God with his gift inspired Gamfam to use the concept. Regardless of what we are dealing with, we should use the challenge as fuel to find a way to give thanks (TIC) through all things.
7. “in my head.” – tylerhateslife.
“in my head.” started off as a random remix and ended up being tylerhateslife biggest song to date. Currently, about 3,000 videos have been made using the sound. The song has collected 5+ million views just off of his top 3 pinned videos on TikTok. The song could almost be considered as part 2 of the rapper’s wildly popular song “mental health.” It hits on a lot of the internal difficulties he has gone through that led him to where he is today.
8. “Beggars Can’t Be Choosers” – Alcott, muted mike
Alcott is a 23 year old rapper from Nashville, Tennessee. He became enamored with Hip-Hop around age 10 and began to study every style the genre has to offer. During the pandemic, he garnered a bit of attention through entering various rap challenges. Most notably, he was chosen as one of two winners for Lacrae’s Set Me Free Remix Challenge. Alcott credits Lecrae, Royce da 5’9″, Logic and Andy Mineo as some of his biggest influences.
“Beggars Can’t Be Choosers” is a song about where artists get their inspiration. “Always heard that beggars can’t be choosers, but you should keep it extra picky what your muse is,” focuses on knowing God is the ultimate creative. He deserves all the credit. This is a song about not losing sight of that reality.

10. “Be A Legend” – NuTone, Kaleb Mitchell, Ray Knowledge
Nu Tone is considered an urban minister, stepping above and beyond the call of music to use his giftings in areas such as street and prison ministry. Additionally, he is the creator of the independent record label, His Throne Records. He has official collaborations with the likes of 1K Phew, Dru Bex, 350, DJ Mykael V, Jered Sanders, Eshon Burgundy, Joey Vantes, Thi’sl, Young Bro, Zee, Xay Hill, Rockstar, JtBryann T, Parris Chariz, and many more.

11. “I Will Not” – Datin, Bryann T, Dax Hamma
Originally from TX, Bryann T is a rising star in the world of Christian Hip Hop, utilizing his redemption from prison life and murder charges, to reaching others in need with the powerful message of Christ.
The choice has been a part of life since the very beginning, going all the way back to the choice that was presented in the Garden of Eden. Datin—along with lyrical flow from Bryann T and production prowess with fellow Menace Movement compadre Dax Hamma—comes a new, bold single for the summer, “I Will Not.” With in-your-face bars and hard-hitting beats, this crew emphatically defies the weak and evil choices presented daily, and clearly makes the declaration that no means, “NO!”
12. “we are not the same.” – tylerhateslife, Pishko
US Army soldier/Christian rapper Tylerhateslife explains that his new single, “‘we are not the same.’ is a song that came from facing some pretty big obstacles right in front of me, and wrote it to express my desire to do whatever it would take to win—while, at the same time, showing my faith in Jesus.” The newly-crowned member of the Rapzilla Freshmen 2022 leveraged his 120K+ TikTok following to issue a verse challenge and 18-year-old Jacob Pishko (11K+ followers) won to land a feature.
13. “Look At Me Now” – Vic Lucas, Scootie Wop
From hard hitting trap beats, to enchanting electronic music, and dance filled afrobeat sounds, he creates music that is not only culturally relevant, but also spiritually significant. Earlier known as, “The Vicious Vic,” to date he’s experienced millions of digital streams and enjoyed a multiple-week charting hit with, “Enough,” seeing success on the Billboard Christian AC charts.
“Look at Me Now” is a confident, and victorious battle cry over the defeat of an enemy. On this track, Nigerian-born and Nashville-based Vic Lucas teams-up with one of indie hip hop’s fastest-rising stars, Scootie Wop, to create an intensely memorable release. Somewhat of a personal dialogue for each artist, as well, the lyrics navigate through stories of both Lucas’ and Wop’s individual triumphs over adversity.
14. “Otherside” – Kaboose, Alie Monot
Kaboose is a hip-hop artist, youth mentor, basketball coach/trainer, and motivational speaker. His 2008 release Excuse Me launched him into the realm of one of the most respected emcees in the late 2000’s Christian hip hop sphere, with notable tracks “Build it Up,” “Goin’ Outta Control,” “Follow Me Now” and more. Now he’s back, rockin’ it exactly where he left off.
This life can be a tough place to fit in and try to check all the boxes that society tells us to be. Often times we find ourselves guarded and insecure, which leads to not taking healthy risks to keep climbing the mountain in front of us. We should understand that God paved the way already. “I continue to keep pushing to understand the journey I’m on,” says Kaboose. “If I’m not focused on him, it’s really just the ‘Otherside’ of the mountain that I’m tryna get to.”
15. “GOING UP!” – DEON, Jon Keith
A young buck in the CHH game, DEON—originally from the “dirty south,” now based out of Detroit, MI—is beginning to make some serious waves in the Christian Hip Hop scene. His debut, self-titled album landed him a Top 10 release on iTunes charts, and as a full independent artist has amassed millions of streams across all platforms. New to the game doesn’t mean he isn’t IN the game, aleady collaborating with mainstays such as 1K Phew, Parris Charriz, Zauntee, and Hulvey, to name a few.
Following up previous single, “Julius Caesar,” DEON keeps coming strong with new track, “GOING UP!” Picking up where “Caesar” left off, with confident tones and a brash-exterior vibe, DEON is also quick to remind the listener that it’s only Christ who strengthens and blesses. The trap-style joint is a heavy-hitter, but should serve to please fans devoted to CHH and general hip hop alike.
16. “Alive” – International Show
International Show has a hopeful message and desires to expand your musical palate. He comes with a storied past that includes homelessness and growing up without his father. But Show wants to use his music to be transparent and connect with others struggling through tough things. He has a unique blend of vocals and production that merges Pop, Hip-Hop, EDM and Latin styles. Before his work in Christian Hip-Hop, Show worked on major releases by some of the most prominent names in mainstream Hip-Hop.
“Alive” is a song about celebration. International Show reminds us that just being alive should be celebrated, not overshadowed by the negative events of the day.
17. “Road Rage”- C4 Crotona, Q-Flo, Prodi Da Prodigal
For the second 2022 Rapzilla Freshmen album single Philly natives Q-Flo and Prodi da Prodigal team up with Datin/Menace Movement’s label artist C4 Cortona to bar out with their lyrical skills. “Road Rage” is laced with a hard-hitting, fast-paced boom-bap beat produced by okaywarren. The song offers hard-hitting punchlines, aggressiveness, and conviction while they share about their past ways and where God has brought them to now.
18. “God Energy” – Monster Tarver, FRANÇOIS, Dax Hamma
Tyrone Evans, a.k.a., Monster Tarver, is a multi-talented artist and athlete. He doesn’t just grace hip-hop stages across the world as he is also a former award-winning WWE NEXUS wrestler. When he isn’t rapping on stage or in the gym perfecting his chiseled physique, Tarver is also an accredited music producer. Tarver has recently joined the Menace Movement family and will begin releasing new original music for the Christian hip-hop label in 2022.
Tyrone Evans is most known by his wrestling moniker Michael Tarver and his time with WWE. This time he enters a different ring, and he is bringing the same kind of energy. That God energy. After years of showing off his athletic ability, he is now ready to show off his lyrical ability. Trading spars with bars, his opponents still leave with bruises.
19. “mental health.” – tylerhateslife
According to Tyler, this wasn’t even supposed to be a song. “I literally just made a TikTok duetting lloyiso singing, ‘All time low,’ by Jon Bellion, and it blew up!” To date, more than 2k videos have been made using the sound on the platform, all-surpassing 5M+ views. “From the death of my mom in 2014 to my family falling apart in 2018, I have battled serious mental health problems. I [hope] that this song continues to help people just like it already has!”
20. “Julius Caesar” – DEON, 1K Phew, 1K Pson
Hip hop is all about making a first impression…making a grand entrance. Images of Julius Caesar making his appearances from back in the day must have been stunning: real-deal glitz, glamor, and pageantry. This was the inspiration behind new single aptly titled, “Julius Caesar,” by relative newcomer, DEON. Peculiar enough, DEON has more than made a grand entrance onto the CHH scene, but this collaboration with 1K Phew & 1K Pson will serve to only bolster his industry cred and clout.

Top 20 Folk + Americana Songs of 2022
1. “Day Go Down” – Candace Coker
Candace Coker is a Trinidad-born singer/songwriter who brings an evocative blend of poetry, gospel and musicality to the world of alternative-folk. Her sound carries with it a jazzy softness and a neo-soul grit, which she attributes to her love for the 1940s, as well as her Afro-Caribbean roots. Discovering her talent at the young age of 10, Coker began songwriting as therapy. A move to Vancouver in 2013 marked a shift in her music, as she gained a new excitement for life and beauty, and as she wrestled through her own curiosities about love, faith and what it means to be Afro-Caribbean within a North American context. Today, her music is a call to celebrate diversity, to heal, and to expose emotion at its root.
The sweet and simple melody of Candace Coker’s “Day Go Down” perfectly encapsulates her soft voice and intrigues the listener. The second single from Candace Coker’s forthcoming album will arrive on all major digital streaming platforms on November 14th. “Day Go Down” continues to show the maturity, depth, and honesty of Candace’s talents as a lyricist and songwriter. “Day Go Down” sings like a private journal entry and addresses the theme of desiring for a tough and lonely day to come to an end. Drawing similarities to singer-songwriters like Joni Mitchell, Tracy Chapman, Suzanne Vega, and the like, “Day Go Down” will appeal to listeners that resonate with thoughtful, vulnerable, and meaningful lyrics.
2. “In This Dirt” – Andrew Crawford, Brandi Colt
Andrew Crawford is a career guitarist, instructor, singer, songwriter, and producer from South Carolina. He has made a career out of touring, teaching and recording. Andrew has shared the stage and studio with multiple Grammy winning and well known artists in the Bluegrass, Americana, and country genres- including Vince Gill, Rhonda Vincent, Jim Lauderdale, and Dale Ann Bradley. A multi-instrumentalist, his reputation for guitar playing is matched only by his talent as a producer and songwriter. Brandi Colt is a songwriter and artist from Upstate South Carolina. After the success of her debut album, “Appalachian Hearts”, she just released “Unbreak a Heart” as the first single from her two volume sophomore album December 30th 2021. Brandi has already performed at shows and festivals supporting Josh Morningstar, Sunny Sweeney, Kayla Ray, Clint Park, 49 Winchester, Alex Williams, and Billy Don Burns. Currently she performs as a duo along side Andrew Crawford, regionally in the south East and all over the US, where they are even set to perform as supporting artists with Molly Tuttle and the Wooks later this year in Kentucky.
“In this Dirt” was written by Jeff McClellan, Andrew Crawford, and Brandi Colt. It is the story of a family patriarch in his later years, unwilling to part from the land his family has cultivated. The song is a testament of how land has more than monetary, practical, and sentimental value. When you have a connection to land it becomes a part of you and that is something we both completely identify with. The song immediately felt natural as a duet. Andrew Crawford Produced the track in his studio. Aaron Ramsey is featured on Bass and mandolin, with Tim Crouch on the fiddlle. Andrew played guitar and banjo.
3. “Let it Free” – Brothers McClurg
Brother’s McClurg’s roots-worship captures the richness of traditional Americana while appealing to the authenticity revered by modern listeners. Based out of Buffalo, NY, their legacy of music and ministry spans three generations and has a deep history serving the local church.
The Beatles proclaimed, “let it be.” Sting said, “if you love someone, set them free…” The notion of holding on so tightly to something, albeit noble and loyal in contexts, can easily become something that can distract, and even deteriorate us—even with the best intentions. Brothers McClurg’s latest, “Let it Free,” give the listener permission to unload carried burdens and the ability to understand and enjoy life’s moment just a little bit more. Listen and relax…take this one in carefree.

Coco O’Connor is an acoustic/folk/folk-rock singer-songwriter born, raised, and residing just north of blues headquarters, Muscle Shoals, AL. In 2019 her single, “The Devil, A Wounded Man, And Me,” was recognized by the 15th annual International Acoustic Music Awards (IAMA). Later that year, she returned to her southern Alabama roots to record When I Was Your World, featuring production by Bill McDermott (George Strait, Tim McGraw, Emmylou Harris), along with engineering by Steve Marcantonio (Dolly Parton, Roseanne Cash, Vince Gill). Also performing on the record from the Muscle Shoals area includes the world-renowned Will McFarlane and The Shoals Sisters, who have each performed with top Soul legends like the late Etta James.
The title track for Coco O’Connor’s new LP, Big Reveal, is a song about regret, longing, and how buying into the myth of “arriving” leaves one empty. It was co-written with ElizaBeth Hill, and Stephanie C. Brown (who discovered Garth Brooks in Muscles Shoals). The song was also was recorded in Muscle Shoals, featuring Will McFarlane who was the guitarist for Bonnie Raitt and Jackson Browne for decades and is listed in the top 100 most influential guitarists in Guitar Magazine.
6. “Dry Season” – Joshua Crozier
Joshua Crozier is a singer-songwriter from Uptown, Chicago; he grew up at Jesus People USA, which is an intentional Christian community many like to describe as a smalltown within an apartment building. This shaped his passion for creating and participating in community–diverse, messy, and beautiful as it is. Joshua is a lover of people, pretty much any form of art, physical activity, nature, Jesus, and coffee. Not necessarily in that order. Although this is the first album he’s ever written, Joshua feels as if he cannot take credit for the adventure that became Desert Rain. He feels as if he were not the creator of these songs; rather, the conduit for them. Joshua is also very grateful for the community of musicians who joined him in the journey of recording. He wrote the album in a season of personal spiritual dryness, as prayer to experience God’s provision in the midst of it all. Joshua hopes these songs will be life-giving and speak truth to your soul, as they still do to his own.
The artist is walking through a spiritually dry season in his life (“I know how it feels to be broken and dried out… poured out empty… heavy hearted… rejected by the world”) and sings of his reliance on God’s love and provision to renew him. What the artist perceives as an answer from the Lord can then be perceived by the listener as an encouragement to do the same.
7. “Humble & Kind” – The Barefoot Movement
Heralded by CMT Edge as “one of the most promising bands on the bluegrass scene,” the music of the Nashville based group The Barefoot Movement is as down to earth as their intention for members of their audience: sit back, relax, take your shoes off, and stay a while. In September of 2014 they received the Momentum Award, naming them “Band of the Year” by the IBMA.
“Humble and Kind” is the latest Cover for a Cause from The Barefoot Movement. A part of the proceeds go towards benefiting the non-profit Soles4Souls. Made famous by Tim McGraw, this song now has a unique Americana spin.
8. “It’s Gonna Get Better” – Volume Five
Mississippi-based Volume Five—a casual jam band that began in 2008—has now grown into one of bluegrass music’s more popular and unique acts. The soulful lead vocals by fiddler Glen Harrell and the band’s tight instrumentals and vocal harmony have earned the group two IBMA Awards, numerous nominations, and many accolades. Among them, are two Top-5 Billboard bluegrass charting albums (Drifter, 2016; Milestones, 2018), with their last album For Those Who Care to Listen (also 2018) reaching #12 on the Billboard bluegrass chart.

Jr. Williams is an acoustic music mainstay, showcasing his talents—most notably on banjo, guitar & vocals—with acts such as Tim Shelton & NewFound Road, NewTown, and currently with the Tim Shelton Syndicate. Williams recently signed a solo deal with bluegrass label Mountain Fever Records.
This easy-pickin’ new single from veteran Jr. Williams is his debut offering off of a recent deal signed with Mountain Fever Records. Complete with flawless vocals and acoustic instrumental work, this sentimental song hovers around topics of inevitable change and remembering the past. More folky/Americana than grassy, this is a solid solo debut for Williams—an artist with an already healthy catalog of features and collaborations with the likes of NewTown, Tim Shelton, and more.
10. “Something To Believe” – Ashley Heath
With a voice often described as “velvet soul,” Asheville songwriter Ashley Heath has been winning over the hearts of Americana music lovers since she gave up her barista apron in the spring of 2015. Currently on tour in support of her sophomore album “Where Hope Never Dies,” Heath continues to deliver her signature blend of sultry blues and anthemic rock n’ roll arrangements to clubs and festivals nationwide, most recently appearing at acclaimed events including Merlefest, Bonnaroo, Shakori Hills, and more and supporting the likes of Donna The Buffalo, Del McCoury Band, Anders Osborne, Shamarr Allen (of Galactic), and other staples on the scene.
A powerful artist who can convey passion, confusion, strength, pleading and more—sometimes all at once—Asheville, NC’s Ashley Heath makes a head-turning debut for Organic Records with the title track from her upcoming EP, Something to Believe. Heath gives a compelling performance that is intimately expressive, offering a common thread of emotion that not only fits the song’s plea but a broader one, too, revealing the distinctive outlook that has earned her a growing number of fans in the region.

Blue-eyed soul singer/musician and artist extraordinaire Jason Lee McKinney and his eponymous Band get gospel on new single, “Sing On.” In anticipation of and introducing his new gospel-blues album, One Last Thing (Bonfire Recording Co., 3/18), this lead single is a straight-up gritty delta blues track with black choir overtones and a positive message.
12. “Hey Jerry” – Ian Zumback

His latest Old Bed Records full-length, The Table, reached Top 40 Billboard charting status upon release in 2017.
Sometimes we all need an unexpected word from an unexpected wise man. Much like the subject in Ian Zumback’s new single, “Hey Jerry,” sometimes it takes someone from outside of our own little bubbles to bring a much-needed perspective. While we revolve around ourselves in our own worlds, there’s a world of things—and people—with highs, lows, and the in-between happening all around us, all of the time. This is a beautiful, story-telling sonic reminder of this principle, all set to a catchy song.
13. “Brothers You and Me” – Brothers McClurg
Brothers McClurg’s roots-worship captures the richness of traditional Americana while appealing to the authenticity revered by modern listeners. Based out of Buffalo, NY, their legacy of music and ministry spans three generations and has a deep history serving the local church.
Sibling rivalry is real, and it’s strong. If you thought it was just a myth, take a listen to Brothers McClurg’s first new music of 2022, and bask in the rich, sullen sounds of dudes singing how hard life can be sometimes (do it, it’s rarified masculine expression!). Most the principle of, “You often hurt the ones you love the most,” but nothing is as strong as the family tie. This song is all about reminding us that—ultimately—true love wins, and the bonds of brotherhood run deep and true.
14. “Old Man -Acoustic Tribute” – Bonfire Music Group, Dennis Parker, Tony Wray
Since 2018, Bonfire Music Group has put together music industry professionals with decades of experience to create a unique artist-centric vision for the music industry (bringing together an all-encompassing approach with touring, in-house studio, and label services). Featured roster artists include GRAMMY-nominated Steve Thomas and his band The Time Machine, AmericanaFest featured artists The Barefoot Movement, bluegrass standout Andrew Crawford, blues/gospel artists Jason Lee McKinney Band, and so much more.
Originally written and recorded by Neil Young on his 1972 album Harvest, Bonfire Music Group’s Dennis Parker & Tony Wray offer up this remake of “Old Man” as a more acoustic-style homage. Not a very far departure, however, as Young’s original also included six-string banjo played by none other than James Taylor (with added vocals by Linda Ronstadt). Parker & Wray’s version slips in a little more twang at times, but still expertly captures the eerie ambiance heard (and felt) from the original.
15. “Honest” – Candace Coker
“Honest” is a song that addresses the artist’s longing to see people authentically express themselves without worry. Candace delivers the message with beautiful melodies that show her unique vocal talent.
16. “I Am The River Wild” – Jeremy Garrett
As a member of the GRAMMY Award-winning Infamous Stringdusters, Jeremy Garrett is renown for his fiddle playing and bold vocal styling. Now, some two years releasing music as a solo artist, he serves up a compelling reminder that some artists’ creativity needs more than one outlet to be completely fulfilled. Among his Stringdusters songwriting contributions, 2014’s “Let It Go” won 1st place in the Folk category for the 2014 USA Songwriting Competition. His songwriting collaborations include Darrell Scott, Oliver Wood (of The Wood Brothers), Jon Weisberger, Josh Shilling, Becky Buller and more.
Jeremy Garrett—fiddler/vocalist for the GRAMMY-winning Infamous Stringdusters—has made a solo bluegrass project that captures the current moment’s spirit of renewal. Filled with a range of original songs and instrumentals—including straight-ahead ‘grass, to the edgy acoustic pop, to newgrass (and even a cover of Bill Monroe’s “Kentucky Waltz”)—album River Wild offers a distinctively personal, yet instantly accessible take on today’s bluegrass in all its flavors.

Bringing a most unique sound to the Christian space, expect everything from soul to blues to rockabilly, and everything in between.
18. “Man Inside” – Acoustic Syndicate
Acoustic Syndicate is a trail-blazing, seminal group that helped create and shape the genre of Jam Grass. In the group’s 25 years, they’ve headlined festivals throughout the Southeast, performed at Bonnaroo and Farm Aid, and influenced several of today’s most popular roots acts like Greensky Bluegrass, The Steep Canyon Rangers, Larry Keel, Yonder Mountain String Band, Leftover Salmon and more. Now, Acoustic Syndicate has returned to the studio 7 years after their last release and is set to share highly-anticipated and long-awaited new music.
While “Man Inside” was conceived over 15 years ago, it’s now Acoustic Syndicate’s last single before a new LP drops this year. It showcases Steve “Big Daddy” McMurry and offers the emotive-based song crafting that has endeared fans to the band. An amalgamation of thought-provoking lyrics and a compelling groove, it’s profoundly personal, fiercely distinctive, and deeply accessible. “Man Inside” comes full circle to show, again, why so many fans fell in love with Acoustic Syndicate in the first place.
19. “Disconnect” – Angelina Creel
Angelina Creel believes in being authentic and honest, especially in her music. An active duty United States Marine out of San Diego, CA, Creel chooses to be vulnerable with her words, in hopes that others can relate. She’s been doing music as long as she can remember, but only recently became more serious about it. Angelina’s inspiration comes from the freedom she feels to express her emotions. You will most often catch her writing sad songs because that’s what she personally vibes out to the majority of the time. “I have decided to shape pain into murals of story telling and beauty,” says Creel.
There are few things more frustrating than trying to get through to a busy or disconnected phone. Creel relates that to the loss of a friendship or relationship or even just a change in the seasons of life. It’s the first song that she has released since becoming a United States Marine. She used her experience of training all across the country to build off of that idea. It has transformed her music and added a new, complex layer. “I was able to create an entirely new sound and feeling like I’m finally coming to myself for the first time in my music.”
20. “Steampipe Coffee” – Circus No. 9, Seff Sipe
Circus No. 9 is East Tennessee’s own progressive bluegrass outfit, blurring the lines between bluegrass, jazz, and rock. Described as “John Hartford meets John Coltrane,” the group has appeared alongside artists including David Grisman, Bryan Sutton, Larry Keel, among others. Comprised of musicians Thomas Cassell, Vince Ilagan, and Ben Garnett, Circus No. 9 is one of the most exciting new bands on the acoustic music scene today.
What’s the first thing you think of when you hear the word, “circus” (besides the candy apples and the freaks)? Variety! The circus—it has everything: wholesome family fun, thrills, animals, the curiously (at times) delicious smells, and oddities you don’t see every day. Relating it to soundscapes, mix all of that up and you’ve got Circus No. 9. Oh, back to the freaks…the boys in this circus are freakishly talented, evidenced here on their Pinecastle Records debut single, “Steampipe Coffee.”

Top 20 Bluegrass Songs of 2022
1. “Heyday” – Lonesome River Band
Beginning almost 4 decades ago, Lonesome River Band continues its reputation as one of bluegrass music’s most respected names. With 4 Top 10 US Bluegrass charting albums, 5x International Bluegrass Music Association (IBMA) Banjo Player of the Year and winner of the Steve Martin Prize for Excellence in Banjo and Bluegrass, Sammy Shelor, leads the group in constantly breaking new ground in the acoustic music arena.
Everyone’s bound to have uttered it a time or two: “Back in my heyday…” Lonesome River Band’s title track to their upcoming LP is a laid-back, slow-pickin’ jam as the song’s narrator recalls the times and “remember whens” of his own personal prime. For a band that’s been around for 40-plus years, you’d think there be some “heyday-singin'” going on here, but LRB still has a long road ahead of them—no looking back, although Heyday, as a whole, will be something for them to hang their hat on.
2. “The Mountains You Carry” – Aaron Burdett
Aaron Burdett is an acclaimed Americana/folk singer-songwriter and performer from Western North Carolina and is listed as “one of the most important western NC musicians” by WNC Magazine. He’s won top awards in multiple songwriting competitions hosted by the likes of Merlefest, The USA Songwriting Competition, Mountain Stage, among others. His last four albums have been voted top 20 Albums of the Year by WNCW radio listeners.
Based a Najwa Zebian quote, Aaron Burdett penned “The Mountains You Carry” on the urge of, “Lessons I need to re-learn again and again,” says the songwriter. “I think as adults we’re often really only children grown larger and we have many of the same feelings and emotions that we did [as kids]. Maybe this song will remind someone to lighten up and give themselves some grace when they [hear] it.” This is Burdett’s first new music since ’21’s successful LP, Dream Rich, Dirt Poor.
3. “Some Might Say” – Danny Burns
Irish-born Americana artist Danny Burns burst onto the national scene with the release of his early 2019 debut album North Country. Two decades before releasing the project, Burns kicked off his career as a traveling Folk singer, logging shows on both sides of the Atlantic. He’s been on the road ever since, sharpening a sound that mixes the folk traditions of his native Ireland with diverse American influences. The collection turned many heads, securing praise and coverage in top publications like Rolling Stone, CMT, American Songwriter, Billboard, No Depression and more. The star-studded collection saw Burns teaming with top artists like Dan Tyminski, Tift Merritt, Holly Williams, Mindy Smith, Cara Dillon, Tim O’Brien, Critter Fuqua and Chessboxer. North Country was accompanied by a major North American tour, which saw Burns performing at select cities in the United States including New York City, Washington DC, Boston, New Orleans, Nashville, Philadelphia and more.
While at the beach in Mexico during the pandemic, Danny Burns got the idea of covering “Some Might Say” by Oasis. “It kinda dawned on me that this had a grass vibe to it and was lyrically very working class to me.” The result is toe-tapping back porch bluegrass.
4. “Ready For A Bluer Sky” – Amanda Cook
After her debut project (2013) landed on the Top 150 Roots Music Bluegrass Album Chart in ’14 and ’15, Amanda Cook has never looked back. Early success brought Amanda to signing with bluegrass label Mountain Fever Records and her first national label release, Deep Water (2017), garnered Top 10 positions on Billboard Bluegrass, Roots Music Report, and Bluegrass Today and remained in the Top 15 collectively for 14 weeks.
Becky and Theo MacMillan wrote an incredible song. “Ready for a Bluer Sky” is about waiting for better times. After these past couple of trying years, Amanda Cook hopes fans will find bluer skies in this song.
5. “Strasbourg/St. Denis” – Tray Wellington
All before the age of 21, Tray Wellington has already had the kind of career most aspiring musicians strive for, but rarely see. Picking banjo seriously since 13, Tray has received numerous awards including IBMA Momentum Instrumentalist of the Year and Momentum Band of the Year (with Cane Mill Road). Having shared the stage with some of the most accomplished musicians in the world, Wellington is fast becoming a household name in acoustic music.
Tray Wellington covers a 21st-century classic in the making from trumpeter Roy Hargrove in “Strasbourg/St. Denis.” Though young, Wellington sets the pace for a stellar group of musicians in this session, recalling the sound of his jazz-leaning predecessors (Bela Fleck, Scott Vestal) as it displays doses of his own creativity. “The first time I heard this song I knew I wanted to record it someday—with this crew playing on it, I knew it was the perfect time to do it!”
6. “Leaving Cleveland” – Tim Raybon Band
Supported by career experiences that range from various TV and festival appearances to studio recordings to the stage of the Opry, renowned banjoist Daniel Grindstaff and vocalist Tim Raybon recently teamed up to create one of the best sounds to emerge on the bluegrass and country scene in years—initially known as Merle Monroe, now bearing the moniker Tim Raybon Band.
After racing on the scene in 2019-21, the new year finds the lead duo of Tim Raybon and Daniel Grindstaff and band bearing a new name—a familiar one, albeit—in Tim Raybon Band. Another attribute listeners will find familiar is the group’s undeniable sound, one that earned them a Roots Music Report #1 traditional bluegrass album of the year for 2021 with release Songs of a Simple Life. New year, new name, new heights to achieve for Raybon, Grindstaff and band—they’re off to a great start.
7. “I Remember The Blues” – Cedar Hill
Formed in 1967, Cedar Hill’s current lineup is not only ensuring the legacy of the group’s brand, but taking it farther than ever before. Recently signing to Mountain Fever Records (Oct. 2020), the group has best been described as, “an original, emotive brand-of-song and hard-driving bluegrass tradition.” Their song, “Pearl” (written by founder Frank Ray) has been the most requested song on Sirius/XM Bluegrass Junction channel for 10+ years. Cedar Hill prides itself on bringing a variety-type element to their stage show, encompassing their audiences in an experience of excellent music, comedy, and good time frivolity.
This fast bluegrass tune recounts the “blues” that are felt after the end of a relationship.
8. “Denver Plane” – Aaron Burdett
Aaron Burdett’s lyrics are soul-touching, intelligent, witty, and poetic all at once, while his music style is a seamless blend of Americana, country, blues, bluegrass, and folk. Aaron is listed as one of the Top 10 most important musicians of western North Carolina by WNC Magazine, alongside such greats as Doc Watson, Steep Canyon Rangers, and The Avett Brothers. He has also received critical acclaim as a songwriter, most recently winning the Chris Austin Songwriting contest at MerleFest for the bluegrass category for his song Rockefeller. His latest album “Dream Rich, Dirt Poor” (2021) debuted at #8 on the Billboard bluegrass charts and has had 4 top 10 radio songs to date. Burdett took home the grand prize in the folk category of the USA Songwriting Contest with “A Couple Broken Windows” in 2018 and was also the winner of Our State Magazine’s Carolina Songs Competition in 2012 with “Going Home to Carolina.” Aaron’s song “Magpie” won third place bluegrass song in Chris Austin Songwriting Contest at Merlefest in 2013. Over the years Aaron has been a finalist in numerous other songwriting competitions, including The Mountain Stage Songwriting Contest, The NC Songwriter’s Cooperative Songwriting Contest, and the Hank Williams Songwriting Contest. As a child, Aaron discovered John Hiatt, Bob Dylan, Cat Stevens, James Taylor, The Rolling Stones, Grateful Dead, The Beatles, The Band, and Rickie Lee Jones on vinyl records in his parents’ living room in the mountains of North Carolina. As a budding guitarist and songwriter, he was drawn to powerful communicators of the time like David Wilcox and Tracy Chapman and John Gorka. In his late teens, he discovered John Prine on a cassette tape dug out of a workshop drawer filled with rusty sixteen penny nails on a Wyoming ranch. He re-discovered the Nitty Gritty Dirt Band on that same trip in a second-hand store in Riverton, Wyoming. Mix all those influences up, add time and pressure, seven full-album releases, thousands of live performances, and you get Aaron Burdett, the songwriter and artist you hear today. Drawing heavily on both the traditions of Appalachian folk music as well as nationally known songwriters, Aaron’s music gives voice to the small rural areas of the Blue Ridge Mountains while also speaking to the working men and women throughout the country.
Aaron Burdett offers up a true story set to a driving beat in “Denver Plane.” The song tells an amusing tale of a time when Burnett found himself running through an airport to make a connecting flight. The Steep Canyon Rangers were there too! He has since been named as the newest member of the GRAMMY-winning sextet. The band is well-known for alternating their own recordings with ones made with legendary banjo-playing comedian and actor Steve Martin.
9. “Five Doors Down in Leadville” – Stillhouse Junkies
Born in a distillery in Durango, CO, 2021 IBMA Momentum Band of the Year and two-time Telluride Bluegrass band contest finalists Stillhouse Junkies play a delirious, head-spinning mixture of original roots, blues, funk, swing, and bluegrass music. With all three band members sharing lead vocal and songwriting duties, the Junkies conjure a wide range of tonal landscapes that pay tribute to the iconic sounds of Gillian Welch, the Allman Brothers, Tim O’Brien, the Wood Brothers, John Hiatt, and countless others while breaking new musical ground with their genre-bending original material. Stillhouse Junkies are proud to be Grey Fox Bluegrass Festival showcase artists and 2020 & 2021 IBMA World of Bluegrass showcase artists.
10. “When You Fall” – Fireside Collective
Since taking 1st place at MerleFest band competition in 2016, the quintet Fireside Collective has been on a roll. This win was accompanied by an IBMA Momentum Award nomination, an aggressive pre-pandemic touring schedule, wowing fans at festivals and clubs across the southeast, and releasing two albums. The band released their Mountain Home Music Company their label debut LP Elements in 2020.
Intricate and energetic, Fireside Collective’s album opener for their 2nd Mountain Home Music Company full-length, Across the Divide (Aug. 5, 2022), “When You Fall” is a classic showcase of the band’s pop-like appeal and technical precision. Unforgettable harmonies and picking prowess abounding, it’s the perfect track-one for setting the tone on 11 whole songs of the same enjoyable expertise. Continually on the rise, Across the Divide further emphasizes new heights for this acclaimed band.
11. “Mary Ann is a Pistol” – Lonesome River Band
Sung by new mandolinist Adam Miller, “Mary Ann is a Pistol” is a sly subversion of stereotypes first recorded over a quarter of a century ago and reclaimed from the record collection of bandleader and award-winning banjo player Sammy Shelor. Penned by Dixie Chicks’ hit “Goodbye Earl” writer, it’s an extended appreciation of a woman who’s, “been a tomboy since she could walk,” and shows no interest in turning more conventional—while earning the unstinting admiration of its country boy narrator.
12. “Grey Wind” – Shawn Lane, Richard Bennett
Shawn Lane is a three-time GRAMMY nominee and 28-time IBMA Award winner with Blue Highway. Lane is a vocalist and an explosive instrumentalist on fiddle, mandolin, and guitar. Shawn is a respected songwriter as well. He was nominated as 2015 IBMA Songwriter of the Year for writing such iconic songs as The Game and Sycamore Hollow. Lane played in the bands of both Ricky Skaggs & Kentucky Thunder and Doyle Lawson & Quicksilver before becoming a founding member of Blue Highway in 1994. Richard Bennett is a respected guitarist, vocalist, and songwriter. He has toured with Flatt & Scruggs fiddle player Benny Sims, the legendary J.D. Crowe & The New South and appeared on Crowe’s 1995 album “Flashback,” which was nominated for two GRAMMY Awards. Shawn and Richard started writing songs together two years ago. Some songs seemed to have a natural duo feel, so the two decided to showcase their songwriting, instrumentals, and vocal chops.
This song seemed to just fall out of the sky one day. Shawn Lane was going through a difficult time when his brother told him “you know, it can only rain so long.”
13. “What Would Your Memories Do” – Wildfire, Dale Ann Bradley
Wildfire is led by award-winning guitarist and songwriter Robert Hale. Hale has previously worked with legends J.D. Crowe and The New South, Livewire, and Eddie and Martha Adcock, plus featured on two Dolly Parton albums (Halos and Horns and For God and Country). The band also features co-founder Curt Chapman (bass), Johnny Lewis (banjo), Matt DeSpain (dobro and vocals), and newest band member Scott Napier (mandolin).
Wildfire—led by award-winning songwriter and guitarist Robert Hale—drops the cover single, “What Would Your Memories Do.” This acoustic ballad also features 2x GRAMMY-nominated songstress Dale Ann Bradley. The track, originally recorded and released by Vern Gosdin in 1984, harkens back to the days of classic country and western music.
14. “What’s That You’re Doing” – Jeremy Garrett
15. “Redbud Tree” – Thomas Cassell
Originally from the sacred bluegrass mountains of southwestern Virginia, Thomas Cassell is among the highest rank of modern bluegrass musicians. Cassell is a founding member of respected progressive group Circus No. 9, and has performed with Billy Strings, the Bryan Sutton Band, Jim Lauderdale, Missy Raines, Becky Buller, and countless others. Now a resident of Nashville, TN, he is cultivating new and original music—not ignorant of the great traditions that preceded him. In 2021 Cassell was named the National Mandolin Champion. He was also named the 2020 Momentum Instrumentalist of the Year by the International Bluegrass Music Association, 2021 FreshGrass Mandolin Champion, and 2016 Rockygrass Mandolin Champion.
Thomas Cassell returns to mark his second solo label release—following-up April’s successful Mountain Fever debut, “Traveling Shoes”—with a Mark Knopfler cover, “Redbud Tree.” A slightly haunting, yet beautifully poetic song, Cassell—backed by a supporting cast anchored by vocalist/GRAMMY-nominee Dale Ann Bradley—put his signature acoustic spin on this now decade’s old, former Dire Straits frontman’s original. The addition of mando, dobro and fiddle, here, is a fitting and welcomed homage.
16. “Giving Up On You” – Lost and Found
The brand of bluegrass by Lost & Found had a certain class and sound that made them stand out from the rest. And they maintained that sound through 45+ years of recording and touring. Formed in 1973, the original Lost & Found band consisted of Allen Mills (bass), Gene Parker (banjo), Dempsey Young (mandolin), and Roger Handy (guitar). Lost & Found became a genre favorite among fans. The beloved single “Love of the Mountains” became a bluegrass standard.
“Giving Up On You” is a treasure along with some other tunes recorded in 2013 at the studio during the band’s last recording session. Dan Wells, on lead vocal and guitar, wrote the song that includes Allen Mills on harmony vocals, Scott Napier on mandolin, Ronald Smith on banjo and harmony vocals, and Mills’ late nephew, Jason Moore, on bass. These historic recordings were mixed and mastered by Aaron Ramsey (Volume Five) and engineered by Sammy Shelor (Lonesome River Band.) Lost & Found intended to record a full twelve-track album, but it was delayed due to Mills’ health issues.
17. “Dreams For Sale” – Theo & Brenna
Theo and Brenna MacMillan are originally from Winchester, Kentucky where they grew up with ten other siblings. The two have played music together most of their lives and assembled the Theo & Brenna Band in 2018. Along with releasing studio projects featuring the duo’s original songwriting, the band maintains a busy schedule of live events both in their home city of Nashville and beyond.
When they were putting together the track listing for their first full-length record, the focus was to pick songs that connected them to our listeners, songs that had staying power in their live shows and that they never grew tired of singing, a highlight reel of their first few years playing as a band. “Dreams For Sale” is the result. The title track is a collaborative work, exploring the different sources of inspiration for their songwriting. The mixture of originals and covers is a true representation of a live Theo & Brenna show.
18. “The American Fiddler” – Andy Leftwich
Leftwich is a 4x GRAMMY-winning instrumentalist, joining Ricky Skaggs’ Kentucky Thunder band while still a teenager. Building an impressive list of Nashville studio credits over the years, and in addition to his collaborations with Skaggs, Leftwich also released two critically acclaimed albums as a member of Three Ring Circle (with dobro player Rob Ickes and bassist Dave Pomeroy). He’s been playing the fiddle since the age of six, winning national awards all over the country before becoming a professional all before the age of 20.
He may be one of the most recorded fiddle players of the 21st century, yet Andy Leftwich shows no signs of even coming close to slowing down, as he anticipates the release of new LP, The American Fiddler (Mountain Home Music Co., 10/28/22). Influenced by Irish and bluegrass fiddling, Leftwich—former member of Ricky Skaggs’ multi GRAMMY-winning Kentucky Thunder band—the variety is abundant throughout, and also features the likes of Sierra Hull, Cody Kilby, Rob Ickes and more on collaborations.
19. “The Mountains Are Calling” – Seth Mulder & Midnight Run
All graduates of college music programs, the boys of Seth Mulder & Midnight Run—hailing from the Great Smoky Mountains region of Tennessee and the Carolinas—formed their union at the Ole Smoky Moonshine Distillery in Gatlinburg, TN in 2015. A town known for plenty of gimmicks, Mulder & the Run are anything but—as the foursome deliver some of the most precise and true acoustic-driven, mountain-made music in recent memory. In 2020, the band was nominated for an IMBA Momentum Band of the Year award, and have plans to take the sound of the Smokies on a European tour in 2022.
Coming from a group who resides and works in the Smoky Mountains of Tennessee, there might not be another acoustic string band more qualified to perform a song titled, “The Mountains Are Calling.” What could be official Applachia chamber of commerce theme music, this new single from Mulder and the boys is classic hillbilly, yet welcoming and refined. An easy going affair, this tune is the perfect mood-setter for quiet nights and glorious views.
20. “Midnight Highway” – Ashby Frank
Born in North Carolina, now Nashville-based songwriter and musician, Ashby Frank, has solidified his status as a household bluegrass/acoustic music name—at least from within the recording/writing community at-large. That’s all about to change, however, as Frank just inked a solo artist deal with the vaulted Mountain Home Music Company (May 2022), with initial singles being delivered soon. Frank has served in a stunning variety of settings, ranging from the Special Consensus, the Marty Raybon Band, Michael Cleveland & Flamekeeper, the Mashville Brigade and the Earls of Leicester to John Cowan’s HercuLeons, the Likely Culprits and his current main gig, Mountain Heart. He’s scored as a songwriter, too, penning songs for Junior Sisk, Amanda Cook, Dale Ann Bradley, Lindley Creek and more, and even taken on the world of comedy as a member of the Darrell Brothers.
Even in bluegrass, it’s rare for an artist to go more than 20 years between releases, but it’s only one of the ways in which singer/songwriter/mandolinist Ashby Frank stands out from the crowd. For that second release, the North Carolina-raised, Nashville-based musician has signed an exclusive recording contract with Mountain Home Music Company. The announcement comes simultaneously with news of its first single, a powerful reading of Peter Rowan’s early 90s classic, “Midnight Highway.”

The song features the band’s southern gospel style and four-part harmony. Greg Jones is lead vocal on verses and tenor vocal on chorus and plays mandolin.
