DESCRIPTION:

“Smokestack City” by Whimper follows a protagonist in the 1970s USSR frustrated by state surveillance, an era when rock music was strictly monitored by the government. Opening with “If I was God, I’d rip the smokestacks from the beach,” the song captures a dream of escaping authoritarianism. As the track builds, the speaker begins to directly defy the regime. This evolution culminates in the final chorus, where the plea “please don’t choke me out” becomes “come and choke me out.”

All roads lead to Nashville, despite only drummer Aidan McGaha being born in Tennessee. The group, each brought to the state by their own journey, would fit together to make a sound so unique they still struggle to define themselves in an existing genre. Guitarist Noah Sacdalan and “front-thing” Jackie Oram first connected in high school after relocating from California, eventually teaming up with Aidan. While Jackie pursued a degree in Classical Voice at Belmont University, Noah honed his production skills at Dark Horse Institute, where he met Jacques Denoux and Brenner Atwood—completing the lineup. Now, a year after forming and playing local venues, Whimper is anticipating their 2027 debut EP.
