- Guitar slinging blues singer, a legendary figure in Chicago blues, was born in Shreveport, Louisiana, and moved to Milwaukee around 1945. In the 1940s, he was an amateur boxer before starting his music career in the early 1950s.
- Performed in Milwaukee nightclubs, adopting his stage name from the film "Mighty Joe Young." In 1955, he returned to Louisiana to make his recording debut.
