Syntax Creative Announces Partnership with Peerless Music Group to Release Christmas Album from Sheryl Lee Ralph of Abbott Elementary
DESCRIPTION:
A frantic slice of late-1960s London funk, “Hey Chick” features Ray Pereira out front with backing from The Cats. Pereira plays a man consumed by attraction, trying to catch the eye of a woman who doesn’t trust his intentions. Figuring a past heartbreak is keeping her guarded, he promises to treat her right—insisting she can see he really means it. But as the rhythm pushes forward, his declarations turn increasingly urgent and desperate: “notice me,” “I need you,” “I mean it.”
KEY SELLING POINTS
- Guyana-born singer Ray Pereira entered The Cats’ orbit in 1969, after meeting keyboardist Tyrone Patterson in London. With a voice built for the pub and club circuit—confident, soulful, and able to cut through a crowded room—Pereira soon became more than an occasional guest.
- The Cats began backing him on live dates, developing into a sharp working outfit around a true frontman.
- Their studio sides together, including “Funk Everything,” “They Say,” and “Hey Chick,” caught the band leaning into its funkier instincts: tough grooves, street-level energy, and Pereira’s commanding vocal presence riding on top.
