“Submarine” tells of dreams that are seemingly off limits. The song illustrates her uncanny ability to wrap a provocative observation in an engaging musical package. After a bizarre song suggestion from a fan and some late night Google searching, Gina wrote about the scarcity of women submarine sailors (not allowed until 2010). Says Furtado, “True to bluegrass form in just one small way, this is the saddest song I’ve ever written, but with the happiest sounding tune.”
