THE GINA FURTADO PROJECT
“Pigtails and Sugarcane”
DESCRIPTION:
The idea for “Pigtails and Sugarcane” came when Gina Furtado used to sit on her back porch at night and listen to her neighbor chatting away on the phone in Spanish. She remembered from a trip to Honduras how common it was for young men to be missing from the households. They are sent to the US to find work to support their families. Also common was for kids to enjoy a tasty treat by cutting a section of sugarcane and chewing on it!
