According to the song’s author, Jeremiah Bonds, “‘Stop Defending Me’ is sort-of a, ‘Cry out to God…’ Turning our feeble minds upward and asking, ‘Like, why are You still in my corner? I’ve messed up over and over, yet You continue to show me Grace!” Originally inspired by a set of poems featured in Confessions Conversations: Study & Reflection Journal (Haley Montgomery), Bonds turned them into a song about lamenting our human guilt and unworthiness—yet knowing Who ultimately makes us worthy.
