A prodigy on mandolin, and a budding songwriting star, Thomas Cassell (also known for helping found Circus No. 9), drops his debut Mountain Fever Records long-player, What You Need to Prove (Mountain Fever, 9/16). Opening track, “The First Move,” really sets the mood for what’s to come—displaying Cassell’s expert-blend of folk, Americana, and roots. Also “easy listening” on the surface, Cassell does bring a subtle and welcomed edge to everything he does, and this set is no exception. Good stuff.
