With “Running From the Moon,” Appalachian Smoke honors mandolinist BJ Taylor’s father, who worked away from home for most of Taylor’s childhood. As a kid, he only saw a dad who came home tired, smelling like diesel, grabbing quick meals, and heading right back to the mines—not yet understanding the sacrifice of motels and junk food to keep the home. Eventually joining his father’s crew, Taylor finally realized the burden of chasing work while running from the lonely pull of the moon.
